The building design was developed to an environmentally driven brief and provides two mix-mode wings located either side of the full height central atrium. The steel structural frame supports exposed flat pre-cast concrete soffits providing passive environmental control, with cladding materials selected to respond to regional and sustainable requirements.
Working for Willmott Dixon, our team worked closely with the project delivery team to coordinate the design through Stage 5 and 6, providing valuable input into CDM and the building’s sustainable performance.
Responsible for the delivery of the electrical, data and specialist control systems, we provided innovative technologies including a wind turbine which generates 6kW and a building wide DALI lighting control system. We also provided interface with mechanical systems such as solar panels to preheat domestic water and connection to a biomass district heating system fuelled with wood chips.
Canolfan Rheidol’s ‘green’ building credentials enabled obtaining grant funding of £313,000 from the Low Carbon Building Programme of the Energy Saving Trust. It was also awarded a BREEAM Excellent rating and was also the winner of the 2010 BREEAM Awards Wales.
